Icons of Utrecht
The city of Utrecht is famous for its historical town centre. However, it also boasts many modern architectural sites by well-known architects such as Rietveld and Rem Koolhaas. Some of these contemporary buildings are situated in the inner city, where the medieval structure and surrounding buildings had to be taken into account during the design and building process. Extensions to the eastern side of Utrecht (Utrecht Science Park) accommodated a further number of architectural highlights.
During this tour we show you a selection of the highlights of architecture in Utrecht on a bicycle. Bring your own [hired] bike and our guide will show you the hot-spots of the city, from the medieval Domplein, via early Twentieth Century Rietveld House, the Utrecht Science Park (De Uithof), to contemporary urban development sites such as Rotsoord and Central Station Area, with buildings such as Stadskantoor and TivoliVredenburg.
The tour will be given by professional guides specialised in architecture, architectural history, social geography, engineering and landscape architecture. They will provide extensive background information on historical, architectural and town-planning developments.
